LOS ANGELES -
Jimmy Mullin, who will lace up his skates for the Miami University hockey team starting in the fall of 2011, was taken in the fourth round of the 2010 National Hockey League (NHL) Entry Draft by the Tampa Bay Lightning Saturday at the Staples Center. He was the 118th overall pick in the draft.
Mullin, a native of Cincinnati, signed a National Letter of Intent with the RedHawks in November of 2009. He will play for the Fargo Force of the United States Hockey League during the 2010-11 season before joining the RedHawks for the 2011-12 campaign.
Mullin, a 5-foot-11 forward, played for Shattuck-St. Mary's Prep School in Faribault, Minn. this past season as a senior when he led the Sabres with 32 goals and 72 points. He played in all 55 games during the 2009-10 season, leading his team to a 40-10-5 record, while also handing out 40 assists, which was second on the team. He played on the school's Under-16 AAA team two seasons ago, when he also led the Sabres in scoring.
Mullin is the 52nd player in Miami hockey program history to be chosen in the NHL draft, including four RedHawks in 2009 (Connor Knapp, Chris Wideman, Reilly Smith and Curtis McKenzie). Along with the four selected in 2009, Miami currently has seven drafted players on its roster with the other three being Justin Vaive, Trent Vogelhuber and Will Weber, all of whom were taken in 2007, while 2009-10 captain Tommy Wingels was drafted in 2008 and signed with the San Jose Sharks earlier this month. The `Hawks have now had at least one current or future player chosen in the NHL Draft every year since 2001.
The 2010-11 RedHawks begin their bid for a third straight Frozen Four appearance with an exhibition contest against Waterloo Sunday, Oct. 3 before beginning the regular season Friday, Oct. 8 by hosting New Hampshire in the first game of a two-game series.
