Miami University head hockey coach Enrico Blasi announced Thursday that rising senior forward Carter Camper will serve as the captain of the 2010-11 RedHawks squad.
Camper (Rocky River, Ohio) replaces 2009-10 captain Tommy Wingels, who signed with the San Jose Sharks earlier this month, forgoing his senior season. Rising junior forward Alden Hirschfeld (Sylvania, Ohio), rising senior forward Andy Miele (Grosse Pointe Woods, Mich.) and rising junior defenseman Will Weber (Gaylord, Mich.) will be the assistant captains for Miami this upcoming season. The RedHawks did not have assistant captains last season.
Camper enters his fourth year suiting up for the Red and White, as he has played in 117 career games, including all 44 a year ago. He has scored 50 career goals, tallying at least 15 each of his first three seasons, while handing out 76 career assists, including 28 in 2009-10, for a total of 126 career points. Camper was named Second-Team West All-America and a First-Team All-CCHA honoree in 2008-09 and an honorable mention All-CCHA selection a season ago.
Hirschfeld has played in 59 career games, including all but one last year. He scored seven goals in 2009-10, including the game-winner in overtime against Michigan that gave Miami the NCAA Midwest Regional title and sent them to the Frozen Four, and has 12 scores in his two-year career so far. Hirschfeld has added eight assists in his career, as well, for a total of 20 career points.
Miele, a Second-Team All-CCHA selection in 2009-10, has taken the ice for the `Hawks in 102 career games, playing in 43 of Miami's 44 games in 2009-10 and all 41 his sophomore year. He has found the back of the net 36 times in his career, including 15 times each of the last two years, and has also dished out 52 career helpers, including a team-best 29 in 2009-10, for 88 career points.
Weber has appeared in 81 career games for Miami, including all but the season opener a year ago (43 games). He has four career goals and 11 career assists for 15 points, but has done most of his work on the defensive end. He blocked 42 shots in 2009-10, second on the team, and 28 in his freshman campaign. Weber was named the Best Defensive Defenseman in the CCHA this past year for his efforts.
Miami opens its 2010-11 season Sunday, Oct. 3 with an exhibition game against Waterloo before opening the regular season Friday, Oct. 8 against New Hampshire at Steve Cady Arena.
