RICHMOND, Ind. - One of the nation's most respected college hockey coaches will be a keynote speaker July 8 at Reid Hospital & Health Care Services's TEAM up!, a sports concussion management seminar.

TEAM up! is free for area coaches of all sports for all ages, but registration is required. Call (765) 983-3258 or click to ReidHospital.org/cc.

Miami University Head Ice Hockey Coach Enrico Blasi, who will be the keynote speaker, has led the Miami RedHawks to back-to-back Frozen Four appearances in the last two seasons and to the NCAA national championship game in 2009, one of six tournament campaigns in his 12-year tenure.

Blasi has also guided Miami to two regular-season conference championships and has been honored as National Coach of the Year by the American Hockey Coaches Association.

"TEAM up! will focus on ways to improve sports concussion assessment and management," said Gregory Woods, M.D., an ImPACT-certified Reid orthopedic diagnostician and surgeon.

Dr. Woods will speak on "Immediate Post-concussion Assessment and Cognitive Testing," review national data on concussion-related injuries, discuss procedures to identify concussion effects and explain what ImPACT testing measures and when it should be administered.

Coach Blasi will be joined in his presentation by Miami assistant athletic trainer Jason Eckerle, who works with Miami's hockey team.

"Sports Concussion: the Athletic Trainer's Perspective," will be the topic of Brian Steele, manager, Reid Sports Medicine. Steele will cover on-field decisions, sideline support and triage.

"Concussions sustained by athletes have been much in the news," Dr. Woods noted. "We need to increase understanding of what a sports concussion is, how serious it might be, the time needed for recovery and the communication needed among coaches, athletes, parents and medical personnel."

TEAM up! will be in Lingle Auditorium on the lower level of Reid Hospital & Health Care Services, 1100 Reid Parkway in Richmond. A light supper will be served.
