COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. - USA Hockey has announced the creation of The Brendan Burke Internship, an annual 12-month internship for a recent college graduate interested in pursuing hockey operations as a career.
The internship has been established in memory of the late Brendan Burke, who passed away unexpectedly on Feb. 5, 2010, at age 21. Brendan, the son of Brian Burke, general manager of the 2010 U.S. Olympic Men's Ice Hockey, was a student at Miami University and served as a hockey operations assistant with Miami's men's ice hockey team.
"This internship is a fitting tribute to a young man who cared so much about hockey and got so much joy from his involvement with the sport," said Dave Ogrean, executive director of USA Hockey. "Brian has been a vital member of the USA Hockey family for many years, and it is a privilege to honor him and his son through the establishment of this position."
"Our family is obviously thrilled to have this internship founded in Brendan's name at USA Hockey," said Brian Burke. "It will forever preserve his memory and provide an opportunity each year for a young person interested in pursuing a career in hockey to gain invaluable experience through our nation's national governing body for the sport."
The first Brendan Burke Intern is expected to begin duties in September. Application details will be available at BrendanBurkeInternship.com in the near future.
