Feb. 1, 2012
FARMINGTON HILLS, Mich. - For the second time in three months, Miami University junior forward Reilly Smith has been named the RBC Financial Group CCHA Player of the Month, winning it for the month of January, the Central Collegiate Hockey Association announced Monday. Smith won CCHA Player of the Month for November, as well, which was his first career Player of the Month honor.
Smith had a stellar January, leading Miami to a 6-2-0 month and climbing the RedHawks all the way to second place in the CCHA standings. He totaled 10 points in eight games, scoring seven goals while dishing out three assists. Of his seven goals, four were game-winners, one was short-handed and three came on the power play. Smith was also +5 on the month, fired 31 shots on goal and blocked five shots.
The highlight of Smith's month was his second hat trick of the season and third of his career, coming Jan. 20 vs. No. 8 Western Michigan to lead Miami to a 3-1 win. He was also +3 in the game and scored the game-winner short-handed. He added the game-winning goal the next night as well and earned both CCHA Player of the Week and Inside College Hockey National Player of the Week after his four-goal weekend.
He started the month with the game-winning goal Jan. 7 at No. 15 Michigan State in a 4-0 win. The next weekend at Lake Superior, he again scored the game-winner Friday while handing out two assists Saturday, his second multi-assist game of the season. After the WMU series Smith was riding a season-long five-game point streak as he had a point in six of eight games in January, including three multi-point games. He finished the month Jan. 28 with a goal and an assist in a 6-0 win over No. 19 Northern Michigan.
Smith's assist against NMU was his 100th career point, making him the 47th player in program history to reach the century mark. He has 19 goals on the year, which leads the CCHA and ties for third nationally. He also has seven game-winning goals after four this month, which leads the CCHA and ties for the national lead. His seven game-winners also tie for second in Miami single-season history. He leads the RedHawks with 27 points on the year.
The RedHawks have now captured four CCHA monthly honors this year as senior Cody Reichard was Goaltender of the Month and freshman Austin Czarnik was Rookie of the Month back in November as well, along with Smith.
Smith looks to keep his strong play going when the RedHawks travel to Ann Arbor, Mich. this weekend for a two-game series at No. 7/8 Michigan.
