GRAND FORKS, N.D. -- Freshman Reilly Smith scored two goals -- including one that tied the game with 2:41 left in regulation -- and dished out an assist to lead No. 1 Miami to a 5-5 tie at No. 4 North Dakota Saturday night in the Subway Holiday Classic. The RedHawks scored twice in the final 10:33 to force the extra session after trailing 5-3 at the end of two periods.

Carter Camper, Trent Vogelhuber and Tommy Wingels also found the net as the RedHawks reversed a two-goal deficit for the fourth time this season.

Smith was at the end of his shift late in the third when he put back an Andy Miele shot for the game-tying goal. Chris Wideman cleared the defensive end with a pass in neutral ice to Smith, who sent it across ice for the intial attempt. Smith continued his run to the net and tapped the loose puck home to cap the comeback.

Miami (9-2-5) jumped out to an early 1-0 lead when Smith tallied his third goal of the season. Pat Cannone made a steal in the corner and fed it into the crease. The pass went all the way through to the opposite circle where Smith easily popped it into the open net.

North Dakota (8-4-2) evened the game at the 13:52 mark with just four seconds left in the second of back-to-back power plays. The goal by Ben Blood from the left point ended a string of 13 straight penalty kills by MU.

The RedHawks went up 2-1 just 3:20 into the second period on an outstanding individual effort by Camper. He picked up possession in neutral ice, skated against two defenders and flicked a wrist shot past Sioux goaltender Brad Eidsness.

But UND responded with two goals in 36 seconds to take its first lead of the game. Danny Kristo capitalized on a hooking call with a blast down the middle to even the game at 7:23, then Jason Gregoire knocked home a rebound of a Blood miss at 7:59.

Miami quickly retied the game at 3-3 on an even-strength goal by Wingels. He captured a deflected shot by Smith at 10:07 and went top shelf to the glove side.

North Dakota answered with back-to-back goals to open a 5-3 lead late the second. Miami allowed its first shorthanded goal of the season with four minutes to play when Brad Malone made a steal deep in the RedHawks' end and swept the puck past Connor Knapp. Just 1:46 later, UND tallied its second power-play goal of the period when Kristo knocked the puck into the net during a scramble in the crease. The play was reviewed to see if Knapp was interfered with, but the call stood for a two-goal Sioux lead.

Miami closed to within 5-4 when Vogelhuber tipped in a Cameron Schilling wrist shot from the left side. Smith started the play by maintaining possession deep in the zone, then passing to Jarod Palmer at the point.

"For two defensive teams, it was quite a shootout," Head Coach Enrico Blasi said. "But we battled through some adversity and had some dumb penalties. It was a real good comeback for our team."

The contest marked the end of a four straight and eight of 10 on the road for Miami. The RedHawks return home next weekend to face CCHA rival Notre Dame at Steve Cady Arena.

EDITOR'S NOTE: The original version of this story was written based on the RedHawks' fourth goal being credited to Schilling, but a video review on Sunday resulted in a scoring change to Vogelhuber.
