Final Stats

ANN ARBOR, Mich. -- Top-ranked Miami scored five unanswered goals after falling behind 1-0 and Cody Reichard made 20 saves as the RedHawks earned an historic sweep of No. 4 Michigan Saturday night, 5-1. The pair of wins marked the first by a visiting team at Yost Arena since Oct. 26-27, 2001, a span of 45 series.

Miami, winners of four straight to improve to 8-1-1 overall and 5-1-0-0 in CCHA play, fell behind 1-0 at the 10:43 mark of the first period when David Wohlberg tipped the puck past Cody Reichard. But the Wolverine advantage was short-lived as Pat Cannone evened the game less that 90 seconds later. With the teams skating four-on-four, Alden Hirschfeld gained possession behind the net and put it out front to Cannone. The junior tallied his third goal of the year by putting back-hander over the shoulder of Bryan Hogan at the 12:22 mark.

Miami finished the period with an 8-6 advantage in shots, nearly equaling its total of 13 for the game the night before.

The RedHawks struck again in the second. With play stuck in the corner, the puck squirted loose in the corner to Andy Miele, who headed straight to net. From his knees, he slid the puck off the post past Hogan to give Miami its first lead, 2-1, at the 7:32 mark. Seven minutes later, Reilly Smith scored his first career goal to make the score 3-1, converted a perfect 2-on-1 rush with Pat Cannone at the 14:50 mark.

Curtis McKenzie pushed the lead to 4-1 at 4:46 of the third, converting a breakaway from Chris Wideman and Carter Camper, before Smith capped the scoring with his second goal, a tap-in of a rebound off a McKenzie shot.

Miami was just one-for-12 on the power play, but held the Wolverines scoreless in eight man-advantage situations as the teams combined for 34 penalties for 95 minutes. The RedHawks finished the game with a 29-20 advantage in shots, incuding 21 over the final two periods.

Miami returns home next weekend to face Ferris State in games Friday and Saturday at Steve Cady Arena.
