No. 10 Miami Finishes Weekend Sweep of No. 8 Notre Dame

NOTRE DAME, Ind. - Miami will return to Steve Cady Arena coming off a two game sweep of No. 8 Notre Dame on the road after posting a 3-2 win in the Joyce Center on Saturday night.

Connor Knapp made some solid saves early picking up where Cody Riechard left off on Friday as Miami was forced to go on the penalty kill early. Miami would reward the freshman when the RedHawks went on the power play as Gary Steffes found the back of the net on assists from Andy Miele and Tommy Wingels. The RedHawks killed three Notre Dame power plays and Miami converted on 1-of-3 power play chances in the first period. The Red and White were outshot by the Fighting Irish 8-2 in the first.

Miami came out firing in the second period after being outshot in the first period. The fast attack would pay off when Justin Mercier found the net off a back door pass from Carter Camper and the second assist was earned by Pat Cannone. The RedHawks would strike again 1:22 later when Alexandre Lacombe would find the net off a rebound from a shot by Brandon Smith. Bill Loupee would pick up the second assist on the goal. Miami outshot the Fighting Irish in the second period 15-2 and the RedHawks also killed off three more power play chances for Notre Dame.


 

 

The Miami penalty kill was back on display in the third period as the RedHawks were able to kill off three Notre Dame third period power-plays. Notre Dame would pull Jordan Pearce at 1:27 and it would paid off right away as Christian Hanson would find the net but that is all Notre Dame would tally.

Up next for Miami they head back to Steve Cady Arena for their first full home series of the season as they take on Alaska, Friday, Oct. 31at 7:35 and Saturday at 7:05. Both games will be televised live on the Ohio News Network (ONN).

Game Notes

Wingels earned his first assist of the season on the Steffes goal in the first period.

The assist for Camper on the goal by Mercier at 17:10 of the third period is Camper’s fifth on the season. All of Camper’s eight points have come on the power play.

On the weekend Miami’s penalty kill was perfect on the weekend going 16-16 against a Notre Dame team that coming into the weekend was ranked 10th in the nation on the power play.

The game winning goal by Lacombe is the first game winner of his career.
