OXFORD, Ohio -- No. 4/5 Miami (18-9-5) picked up two points in the CCHA standings on Saturday night with 1-1 tie and a 2-1 shootout win over Northern Michigan.

Carter Camper (Rocky River, Ohio) was the hero for the RedHawks as he netted the game-tying goal in the second period and opened the shootout with a score. Miami was also able to hold the Wildcats to a school-record low seven shots.

Northern Michigan was able to take the early lead with an even-strength goal at 13:12 of the first period. Nick Sirota found the net with assists from Tyler Gron and Andrew Cherniwchan.

Miami battled back in the second period with the 11th power-play goal of the season by Camper. Pat Cannone (Bayport, N.Y.) and Chris Wideman (St. Louis, Mo.) were credited with the assists. The RedHawks dominated the shots on goal with 47 attempts finding their way to Northern Michigan netminder Brian Stewart. At the other end of the ice, Connor Knapp (York, N.Y.) saw seven shots all game.

With the game deadlocked after regulation and five-minute overtime, the game headed to a shootout. Mark Olver of UNM went first and slipped the puck past Knapp but Miami would respond with a highlight goal by Camper. The second round of the shootout featured saves by Stewart and Knapp. The third round began with another save by Knapp, putting the pressure on Miami shooter Cannone. The sophomore was equal to the challenge as he beat Stewart with a back-handed shot into the top of the net.

In the eyes of the NCAA the game goes in the books as a tie, but with the shootout victory Miami picks up an extra point in the CCHA standings.

Miami will be back in action next weekend with a home-and-home series with Ohio State. The RedHawks will host the Buckeyes on Friday night at 7:35 p.m. and travel to Value City Arena on Saturday night for a 7:05 puck drop.  Friday's game will be shown live on the Ohio News Network and on the NHL Network in the United States.
