REDHAWKS HEAD TO HERB WIMBERLY INTERCOLLEGIATE: Coming off a win at the Georgetown Intercollegiate last week where the RedHawks posted their first team finish in a year, Miami University’s golf team rounds out its fall slate this week, playing in the Herb Wimberly Intercollegiate hosted by New Mexico State University Oct. 27-28. Including Miami and host New Mexico State, 18 teams are slated to compete at the tournament: Air Force, Utah, Iowa State, Kansas State, UTEP, Nevada, Denver, Nebraska, Ball State, Northern Colorado, Akron, Washington State, Cal-Poly, Idaho, Weber State and Colorado. Miami’s line-up includes seniors Anthony Cordes, Aaron Crist, Ben Bastel and Ben Wood, and sophomore Nathan Sutherland. Live scoring for the tournament will be available at www.GolfStat.com.
REDHAWKS WIN GEORGETOWN INTERCOLLEGIATE: Senior Aaron Crist fired 70-74=144 to finish in second place, while three other RedHawks finished among the top 20 to propel Miami to a first-place finish among the 12-team field at the Georgetown Intercollegiate. It was Miami’s first tournament win since seizing the Jim Colbert Intercollegiate Sept. 24-25, 2007. The RedHawks bettered second-place William & Mary by five strokes at the Georgetown Intercollegiate and third-place Richmond by a nine-stroke margin. The RedHawks had two others finish among the top 10. Sophomore Nathan Sutherland shot 73-74=147 for the tournament and tied for fourth place, while senior Ben Bastel shot 72-77=149 to tie for sixth place. Senior Anthony Cordes shot 72-79=151 to tie for 16th place, and sophomore Michael Drobnick shot 76-78=154 to tie for 31st place. Due to frost on Monday morning, which was originally scheduled as a 36-hole day, one of the rounds was cancelled and the tournament shortened to two rounds.
LAST TIME AT THE HERB WIMBERLY: Miami finished in a tie for eighth place among the 17-team field at the 2007 Herb Wimberly Intercollegiate. Ben Wood paced the RedHawks, tying for 17th place with rounds of 72-68-72 to finish at one-under par 212. Nathan Sutherland consistently lowered his scores throughout the tournament with rounds of 74-70-68 to finish at even-par 213 and tying for 20th place. Craig Voorhees tied for 45th place, while Ben Bastel tied for 47th place and Andrew Aseltine finished in 86th place.
CRIST OFF TO STRONG START: Senior Aaron Crist has had a solid start to the 2008-09 campaign. In four tournaments to open the season, he has finished among the top 15 in three tournaments, including two top-10 finishes. He recorded his best individual finish at the Georgetown Intercollegiate, finishing second at two-over par 144. Crist finished just one stroke behind individual medalist Doug Hurson from William & Mary.

BIG BREAK X: MICHIGAN: Miami University head golf coach Casey Lubahn recently took part in a reality series called the “Big Break”. The series “Big Break X: Michigan” featuring Lubahn and his wife, Rachel, premiered on the Golf Channel on Oct. 7 and runs through December. SUTHERLAND
LEADS THE WAY: During his freshman campaign, Nathan Sutherland was Miami’s top finisher in six events and finished among the top-20 in five events and among the top-25 in nine tournaments. In four tournaments this season, Sutherland has been Miami’s top finisher in two. Last week, he finished in a tie for fourth place at the Georgetown Intercollegiate.
ALL-AMERICA SCHOLARS: Seniors Ben Wood and Ben Bastel were named Cleveland Golf All-America Scholars by the Golf Coaches Association of America. Wood majors in marketing at Miami, while Bastel majors in finance. Additionally, junior Andrew Mock was one of 16 Miami student-athletes who earned a 4.0 term GPA for the spring semester in 2008.
