RedHawk Golfers to Play in Georgetown Intercollegiate

REDHAWKS HEAD TO GEORGETOWN INTERCOLLEGIATE: After a three-week break, Miami University's golf team returns to action when it competes in the Georgetown Intercollegiate Oct. 20-21, hosted by Georgetown University. Including Miami and host Georgetown, 12 teams are slated to compete at the tournament: Campbell, DePaul, Detroit, Gonzaga, Minnesota, Richmond, St. John's, St. Joseph's, UNC- Greensboro and William & Mary. Miami's line-up includes seniors Anthony Cordes, Aaron Crist and Ben Bastel, and sophomores Michael Drobnick and Nathan Sutherland. RETURNING TO WEEK ONE LINEUP: Miami is using the same lineup that competed at the season-opening Rutherford Intercollegiate and posted a fourth-place finish among the 12-team field. Nathan Sutherland paced the RedHawks, tying for eighth place at five-over par 221. Aaron Crist tied for 13th place, while senior Ben Bastel finished in a tie for 17th place. Michael Drobnick finished in a tie for 20th place, and Anthony Cordes finished in a tie for 34th place.

CRIST OFF TO STRONG START: Senior Aaron Crist has had a solid start to the 2008-09 campaign. In three tournaments to open the season, he has finished among the top 15 in two tournaments and recorded his best individual finish at the Jim Colbert Intercollegiate, tying for seventh place to lead the RedHawks. In the opening round of the season at the Rutherford Intercollegiate, Crist fired a 69, which is the best round by a RedHawk in 2008-09. He is averaging 74.44 over nine rounds.


 

 

SUTHERLAND LEADS THE WAY: During his freshman campaign, Nathan Sutherland was Miami's top finisher in six events and finished among the top-20 in five events and among the top-25 in nine tournaments. In three tournaments this season, Sutherland has been Miami's top finisher in two.

LAST TIME OUT: Michael Drobnick and Nathan Sutherland each carded 71s in the final round as Miami concluded play at the Saint Mary's Invitational with a 13th-place finish. After an 80 in the opening round, Sutherland battled back with rounds of 69 and 71 to tie for 35th place at seven-over par 220 to lead the RedHawks. Drobnick continued to improve his scores over the three rounds, shooting 76-74-71=221 to finish in a tie for 42nd place at eight-over. Craig Voorhees finished in a tie for 69th place, while Aaron Crist tied for 50th place and Mark Robinson tied for 61st place.

BIG BREAK X: MICHIGAN:
Miami University head golf coach Casey Lubahn recently took part in a reality series called the "Big Break". The series "Big Break X: Michigan" featuring Lubahn and his wife, Rachel, premiered on the Golf Channel on Oct. 7 and runs through December.

SOPHOMORE STAPLES: Sophomores Nathan Sutherland and Michael Drobnick have been staples in the Miami lineup since arriving on campus a year ago. Sutherland has competed in every event during his Miami career, while Drobnick as played in all but two and is making his 11th straight appearance in the Miami lineup.

ALL-AMERICA SCHOLARS: Seniors Ben Wood and Ben Bastel were named Cleveland Golf All-America Scholars by the Golf Coaches Association of America. Wood majors in marketing at Miami, while Bastel majors in finance. Additionally, junior Andrew Mock was one of 16 Miami student-athletes who earned a 4.0 term GPA for the spring semester in 2008.
