REDHAWKS OPEN 2008-09 CAMPAIGN AT RUTHERFORD INTERCOLLEGIATE: Miami University’s golf team opens its 2008-09 campaign at the Rutherford Intercollegiate, hosted by Penn State University on the Mystic Rock Course at Nemacolin Woodlands Resort in Farmington, Pa. Including Miami and host Penn State, 12 teams are slated to compete at the tournament: Ball State, Bowling Green, Cleveland State, Marshall, Missouri, Purdue, Richmond, Toledo, VCU and Xavier. Miami’s line-up includes seniors Ben Bastel, Anthony Cordes and Aaron Crist and sophomores Michael Drobnick and Nathan Sutherland. Live scoring for the tournament will be available on GolfStat.com.

LAST TIME AT THE RUTHERFORD INTERCOLLEGIATE: Miami competed in the Rutherford Intercollegiate last spring and finished in second place among the 12-team field. Three RedHawks finished among the top 15 with Nathan Sutherland posting a second-place finish at six-over par 219 and Ben Bastel and Ben Woods tying for 13th place.

BASTEL KEEPS ON STREAKING: Senior Ben Bastel has played in every event of his Miami career and keeps his streak alive as he is part of the five-man lineup for the Rutherford Intercollegiate. Sophomore Nathan Sutherland has started a streak of his own, playing in all 13 events a season ago.

REDHAWKS RETURN TWO ALL-MAC PERFORMERS: The RedHawks return two golfers who earned Mid-American Conference all-league accolades a year ago. Ben Wood and Nathan Sutherland both earned Second-Team All-MAC honors in 2008.

VETERAN ROSTER: Miami returns its entire roster from a season ago. The RedHawks have five seniors (Ben Bastel, Anthony Cordes, Aaron Crist, Mark Robinson, Ben Wood), four juniors (Andrew Aseltine, Charlie Hendrickson, Andrew Mock and Craig Voorhees) and three sophomores (Michael Drobnick, Matt Stasiak and Nathan Sutherland). Miami’s only new face is head coach Casey Lubahn, who was hired to lead the Miami program at the beginning of August.

ODDS ‘N ENDS: Miami University head golf coach Casey Lubahn recently took part in a reality series called the “Big Break”. The series “Big Break X: Michigan” featuring Lubahn and his wife, Rachel, will air on the Golf Channel beginning in October of 2008.

Seniors Ben Wood and Ben Bastel were named Cleveland Golf All-America Scholars by the Golf Coaches Association of America. Wood majors in marketing at Miami, while Bastel majors in finance. Additionally, junior Andrew Mock was one of 16 Miami student-athletes who earned a 4.0 term GPA for the spring semester in 2008.

In just his second appearance as a RedHawk, Michael Drobnick won the Jim Colbert Intercollegiate last fall, leading Miami to a first-place team finish. He shot 73-73-70-216. Following his first-place finish, Drobnick was named GolfWeek Magazine National Golfer of the Week and MAC Golfer of the Week.
