NORMAN, Okla.--Two rising seniors in the Miami University men's golf program have earned national recognition for their prowess on the golf course and in the classroom from the Golf Coaches Association of America in conjunction with its title sponsor Cleveland Golf. Ben Bastel (Upper Sandusky, Ohio/Upper Sandusky) and Ben Wood (St. Louis, Mo./Kirkwood) were tabbed Division I Cleveland Golf All-America Scholars, announced by the GCAA the evening of July 9.
Bastel, who owns a 3.48 grade-point average and majors in finance, has participated in every event during his Miami career. He had played in all 13 tournaments in 2007-08, averaging 75.57 over 37 rounds. He posted five top-20 finishes with his best finish of the season coming at the Hoosier Invitational where he tied for ninth, shooting 69-77=146. Bastel was Miami's top finisher at the Jaguar Intercollegiate, tying for 20th place. He also tied for 16th place at the Jim Colbert Intercollegiate, helping Miami to a first-place team finish.
Wood, who owns a 3.20 grade-point average and majors in marketing, was a second-team all-MAC selection in 2007-08. He was tabbed MAC Co-Golfer of the Week after finishing third at the Hoosier Invitational. Wood played in every tournament of the season, averaging 74.41 over 37 rounds which ranked 15th among Mid-American Conference statistical leaders. He had eight top-25 finishes, including three top-five finishes. At the Jim Colbert Intercollegiate, Wood tied for second in his best finish of the season. He shot 72-74-71=217 to help Miami to a first-place team finish. Wood also tied for third at the Hoosier Invitational and placed fifth at the FirstEnergy Intercollegiate. Wood was Miami's top finisher in four events.
To be eligible for Cleveland Golf All-America Scholar status an individual must be a junior or senior academically and compete in at least two full years at the collegiate level, participate in 70-percent of his team's competitive rounds or compete in the NCAA Championships, have a stroke average under 76.0 in Divi¬sion I and maintain a minimum cumulative grade-point average of 3.2. A recipient must also be of high moral character and be in good standing at his college or university. A total of 96 players earned the honor in Division I.
