FARMINGTON, Pa. - Miami University junior golfer Nathan Sutherland got his summer season off to a strong start when he tied for second in the 109th Amateur Championship, sponsored by the West Pennsylvania Golf Association. Sutherland shot an impressive 65 in the third round to finish the tournament with a two-under par score of 208.

Nathan Smith, a 30-year old amateur from Pittsburgh won the event for the third straight year with a score of three-under par.

Sutherland was one of the top golfers for Miami during the 2008-09 season. He was the only golfer to qualify for every event and was the low RedHawk finisher in four tournaments during the year. He was honored as MAC Co-Golfer of the Week after finishing in fifth place at the Pinehurst Intercollegiate March 15-17.
