RedHawks in Second Place after Two Rounds at Herb Wimberly Intercollegiate

LAS CRUCES, N.M.--Bolstered by an opening round of 287, Miami University's golf team carried momentum from last week's win at the Georgetown Intercollegiate into the first day of the Herb Wimberly Intercollegiate. The RedHawks currently sit in second place, just two strokes behind first-place Denver headlining into Tuesday's final round.

Miami's first-round score of 287 led the tournament field by six strokes heading into the second round. Entering the final round, Miami holds a five-stroke lead on Kansas State and Washington, who are tied for third place.

"We definitely got off to a good start again," said head coach Casey Lubahn. "From a coaches' standpoint, that's a sign of good preparation and a good attitude. We were sharp coming off last week in that first round, and we took care of business. We weren't too high, and we weren't too low."

Freshman Nathan Sutherland fired a 69 in the first round on the par 71 course. With his 75 in the second round, Sutherland is tied for 17th place at two-over par 144.

"Nathan's round this morning was one of the best I've seen anyone on this team play," remarked Lubahn.

Senior Ben Wood carded a pair of 72s and also is tied for 17th place at two-over par 144.

"Having Ben Wood back in the lineup was a jump-start for us," said Lubahn. "He got off to the start we thought he would, and when he plays like that, we are a good team.

Seniors Ben Bastel and Aaron Crist were consistent and solid for the Red and White on Monday. Each carded 73 in both rounds, and the duo is tied for 26th place at four-over par 146. Senior Anthony Cordes battled back from an opening round of 78 to card a 74 in the second round. Cordes is tied for 60th place at 10-over par 152.

"We didn't do anything special in the first round," said Lubahn. "The guys were themselves. They were relaxed and played to their strengths. Had we finished the first round like we wanted, we could have been leading by eight or 10 strokes, which is pretty good. The overriding goal is to be ourselves. Good teams don't have to play great to win. If we take care of business and don't make mistakes, then we will all be satisfied with our performance."

"Tomorrow we have to attack," continued Lubahn. "We have to go out there with a swagger that we are the best team. We are in a good position heading into Tuesday's round, and we just need to worry about what we are doing and not worry about anyone else. If we go through our process goals, trust in our preparation and ourselves, we will be just fine. We need to attack when we can, play to our strengths when we are unsure and play smart.

Miami concludes play at the Herb Wimberly Intercollegiate with Tuesday's final round.
