Round One Results
BEALLSVILLE, Md. – The Miami men’s golf team finds itself in seventh place after shooting an 18-over par 302 in the first round of the Georgetown Intercollegiate. Wet and rainy conditions allowed only one round to be played on Monday, and the tournament has been shortened to 36 holes.
Washington State leads the tournament at one-over par, however Miami is only six shots out of second place, currently held by both Richmond and UNC Greensboro at 12-over par.
“I didn’t think we had a great round today,” said head coach Casey Lubahn. “We were kind of ill-prepared due to the circumstances. Because of the wet weather, we were not allowed on the course for our practice round Sunday, or until we tied off at noon on Monday. Despite that w
e had a couple of guys play strong rounds and with a good round tomorrow we have a shot to compete for second place.” Craig Voorhees had the top round for the RedHawks, shooting a one over par 72 that finds him in a tie for fifth place individually. He is four shots off the lead. Michael Drobnick is tied for 15th after shooting a four over par 75. Nathan Sutherland is tied for 29th with a six over par 77, while Blake English is tied for 37th after shooting a seven over par 78. Charlie Hendrickson rounds out Miami’s golfers in a tie for 65th place after shooting a 17-over par 88.
“I knew Craig was going to play well when we were at the range today,” said Lubahn. “We had to hit off mats instead of natural grass and he was making jokes about it, not letting it bother him. He turned a negative situation into a positive. I was very proud of his round.
Miami concludes play at the Georgetown Intercollegiate with its final 18-hole round on Tuesday.
