Miami Finishes 13th at Saint Mary's Invitational

PEBBLE BEACH, Calif.--Sophomores Michael Drobnick and Nathan Sutherland each carded 71s in the final round as Miami University's golf team concluded play at the Saint Mary's Invitational with a 13th-place finish.

"It was good to see the sophomores play well," said head coach Casey Lubahn. "Michael needed a round like that. Nathan played two very solid rounds and had a great comeback after the first round this week."

After an 80 in the opening round, Sutherland battled back with rounds of 69 and 71 to tie for 35th place at seven-over par 220 to lead the RedHawks. Drobnick continued to improve his scores over the three rounds, shooting 76-74-71=221 to finish in a tie for 42nd place at eight-over.

"We played better today, but we're not doing enough of the little things right now to put together great rounds," added Lubahn. "We need to have more tenacity and find a little more fire within ourselves than we have right now for the coming tournaments."

Junior Craig Voorhees carded a 74 in the final round, which was his best round of the tournament, and finished in a tie for 69th place at 16-over par 229. Seniors Aaron Crist and Mark Robinson each shot 75s on Tuesday. Crist tied for 50th place at 10-over par 223, while Robinson tied for 61st place at 13-over par 226.

"As we prepare for our next tournament, we need to go back to the basics and work on fundamentals. We need to start getting the ball up and down with our wedges a lot better and play the par 5s much better," said Lubahn. "It's a little bittersweet. Being at Pebble Beach is special, and we competed on a world-class golf course in Poppy Hills. Unfortunately, our performance at the tournament was not as good as we would have liked it to have been."

 

 

San Francisco won the tournament by a five-stroke margin. The RedHawks were one stroke off of 12th place and just two strokes out of 11th place.

Miami returns to action Oct. 20-21 at the Georgetown Intercollegiate.
