OXFORD, Ohio -- Junior Ryan Swelin (Sundre, Alberta/Sundre) shot a one-under par 215 at the Radrick Farms Intercollegiate hosted by the University of Michigan to finish in fifth place, just one stroke out of tying for second place and four strokes behind individual medalist Keven Fortin-Simard (Memphis). Swelin paced the Miami University golf team, which tied for ninth place with Indiana University in the season-opening tournament for the RedHawks. Wisconsin, Purdue and Memphis tied for first place.
Swelin is picking up where he left off last season, after tying for second at the Mid-American Conference Championship in May. He carded rounds of 73, 72 and 70 for the RedHawks at the Radrick Farms Intercollegiate, leading the RedHawks in all three rounds.
Finishing at three-over par 219, junior Matt Thomas (Blasdell, N.Y./Orchard Park) finished in a tie for 18th place, while junior Rob Davidge (Oxford, Ohio/Culver Academy) regrouped after a 79 in the opening round to shoot 73 and 71 in the next two rounds to finish in a tie for 35th place at seven-over par 223. Freshman Connor Doherty (Woodstock, Vt./Woodstock Union) tied for 62nd place in his first collegiate tournament, while junior Mike Calkin (St. Charles, Ill./St. Charles East) finished in 77th place.
Miami returns to action next weekend (Sept. 18-19) at the Northern Intercollegiate in Madison, Wisc., hosted by the University of Wisconsin.
