Player Profile

Position:
Head Coach

Experience:
Seventh Year

In his seventh season at the helm of the Miami University men's golf program, head coach John Wiler leads a team that demonstrates great promise. With a team comprised of five juniors, four sophomores and three freshmen, the RedHawks have shown they can compete at a high level. In 2006-07, Miami had three top-five finishes, while recording two top-five finishes in six tournaments during the fall of 2007.

Among those top finishes in the fall, was the program's first win as a team since 2001, winning the Jim Colbert Intercollegiate. Freshman Michael Drobnick won the Jim Colbert Intercollegiate, while junior Ben Wood tied for second to spearhead Miami to a first-place team finish. In the following event, freshman Nathan Sutherland tied for second at the Belmont Fall Shootout. Additionally, Wood tied for first at the 2007 FirstEnergy Intercollegiate during his sophomore campaign.

In Wiler's first year with the RedHawks, Miami produced its first Mid-American Conference medalist in four years as Eric Phipps won a four-hole playoff to seize medalist honors. Wiler's recruiting efforts continue to bring in top talent, and as a result, Miami's national ranking has experienced a dramatic upswing, jumping 40 spots from his first to his second year.

Wiler and the RedHawks further pushed their success in 2002-03 as Miami posted a second-place showing at the MAC Championship behind a one-two finish from Mark Weghorst and Phipps. Weghorst became the 12th in school history to capture MAC medalist honors, and it was just the fifth time in program history Miami produced back-to-back conference medalists. Wiler's first recruiting class also was ranked 12th nationally in freshman class impact.

During his tenure, Miami has produced two conference medalists and has had three golfers earn six all-conference honors. Miami has placed at least one golfer on the all-conference teams during five of Wiler's six years at the helm of the program.

Wiler understands the dedication and drive it takes to be successful.

A two-time all-America and Academic all-America golfer at Allegheny College, Wiler spent six years on the Kent State golf staff. Over his final four years, Wiler served as the men's and women's assistant golf coach following a two-year stint as the graduate assistant coach for KSU's men's golf program. During his time with the Golden Flashes, the men's team captured five Mid-American Conference titles, made five NCAA Tournament appearances, finished as high as ninth at the 2000 NCAA Championships and produced five all-America selections.

Wiler also was instrumental in the development of the women's golf program over its first three years of existence. He was heavily involved with the recruitment of Kent State's inaugural women's golf class and was an active recruiter for both teams. The Golden Flashes, who finished 15th at the 2001 NCAA Championships, won three MAC Championships, touted three MAC Freshmen of the Year and the 2001 MAC Player of the Year.

In addition to earning Division III All-America and Academic All-America status at Allegheny College, Wiler was Allegheny's 1995 Senior Male Athlete of the Year. The four-year letterwinner served as the golf team's co-captain during his senior campaign.

A native of Erie, Pa., Wiler earned his bachelor's degree in English from Allegheny in 1995 and his master's degree in sport administration from Kent State in 1997.

In addition to his time with the Miami program, Wiler also serves as an instructor at the annual Purdue Coaches Golf School and also has directed NIKE/Miami University Junior Camps in the past.

Wiler was recently named to the North Coast Athletic Conference 10th Anniversary Golf Team. He served on the NCAA Division I Midwest Regional Advisory Committee from 2002-05.
