Notes from Camp Oxford -- Day 18

COUNTDOWN TO VANDERBILT: The countdown continues and now only eight days remain until Miami's season opener at home vs. Vanderbilt on August 28.

WEDNESDAY'S PRACTICES: The RedHawks had a full-pads practice on a hot Wednesday afternoon where temperatures approached 90 degrees. Through the first 18 days, Miami has not lost a single player to a long-term injury.

THIS WEEK'S PRACTICES: The RedHawks will practice under the lights on Thursday night (Aug. 21) at 7:30 to replicate the conditions they'll face a week later in the season opener vs. Vanderbilt. ... The team will not practice on Friday (Aug. 22). ... Coach Shane Montgomery will conduct his first weekly press conference of the season this coming Friday (Aug. 22) at 11 a.m. The media is invited to attend the session that is held in Coach Montgomery's office.

MISCELLANEOUS NOTES: Offensive linemen once again top the weight charts among Miami football players, averaging 296 pounds per man. That average includes 255-pound lightweight center Steve Bray. ... Altogether, eight heavyweights tip the scales at 301 pounds or more, led by 323-pound redshirt freshman Brandon Brooks. Senior linemate Josh Satterthwait is the second-heaviest RedHawk at 315 pounds. The heaviest defensive player--third among all players--is junior nose tackle Martin Channels at 314 pounds. ... After offensive linemen, defensive linemen average 272 pounds a man, followed by tight ends (250 avg.), linebackers (230 avg.) and quarterbacks (212 avg.). ... The lightest player at 160 pounds is sophomore receiver/kick returner Jamal Rogers. Freshmen defensive backs D.J. Brown and Brian Sutherland are right behind Rogers at 167 and 168 pounds, respectively. ... The heaviest tight end is 280-pound sophomore RHYS NEWSMAN. ... The heaviest linebackers are Joey Hudson and Clayton Mullins at 236 and 235 pounds, respectively. The third member of the Butkus Watch List trio, Caleb Bostic, weighs in at 231 pounds. ... The heaviest quarterbacks are Clay Belton (224) and Daniel Raudabaugh (223). ... The players who have put on the most weight since camp began are freshman offensive lineman Nick Kemper (nine pounds, 269 to 278) and redshirt freshman tight end Kendrick Bruton (nine pounds, 234 to 243). ... The man who's lost the most weight since checking in on August 2 is senior offensive lineman Dave DiFranco (12 pounds, 322 to a svelt 310).
