Notes from Camp Oxford -- Day 16
COUNTDOWN TO VANDERBILT: Just 10 days remain until Miami's August 28th season opener at home vs. Vanderbilt.
MONDAY'S PRACTICES: The RedHawks had a full-pads practice in the morning, then concentrated on special teams play in the evening practice that began at 6 p.m.. The players were treated to ice-cold watermelon afterwards.
THIS WEEK'S PRACTICES: Miami will practice at 9:15 Tuesday morning (Aug. 19) ... the coaches are undecided as to whether it will be a morning or an afternoon practice on Wednesday (Aug. 20) ... the RedHawks will practice under the lights on Thursday night (Aug. 21). ... Coach Shane Montgomery will conduct his first weekly press conference of the season this coming Friday (Aug. 22) at 11 a.m. The media is invited to attend the session that is held in Coach Montgomery's office.
MISCELLANEOUS NOTES: Miami defensive coordinator Jay Hood revealed his slightly revised two-deep line-up after Monday night's practice. The starters feature four seniors (end Joe Coniglio, middle linebacker Joey Hudson, outside linebacker Clayton Mullins and strong safety Robbie Wilson), five juniors (end Travis Craven, nose tackle Martin Channels, outside linebacker Caleb Bostic, free safety Jordan Gafford and cornerback Jeff Thompson) and two sophomores (tackle Sean Redwine and cornerback Brandon Stephens). The second squad includes two seniors (middle linebacker Chris Shula and cornerback Bryan Roland), three juniors (tackle D.J. Svabik, nose tackle Mark Paun and cornerback Wendell Brunson) and six sophomores (end Jordan Stevens, end Morris Council, outside linebacker Ryan Kennedy, outside linebacker David Davis, strong safety DeAndre Gilmore and free safety Ben Bennett). Every player on the 22-man defensive two-deep has earned at least one varsity letter. Cumulatively, they've earned a total of 37 letters. ... Since 1946 Mid-American Conference football has entertained college gridiron fans across the nation and an inside look at season 62 debuts Saturday, August 23, as the 2008 MAC Gridiron Preview Show airs on FOX Sports Net Ohio at 5 p.m., ET. Hosted by veteran sportscasters Michael Reghi and Jeff Phelps, this year's show is presented in an interactive format and was filmed at the league's media day in July at Detroit's Ford Field. This marks the sixth consecutive year FSN Ohio has produced an in depth preseason look at the upcoming MAC season. In addition to the August 23, 5 p.m. time slot, the show will air again on FSN Ohio on the following dates and times: Sunday, August 24 at 1 p.m.; Monday, August 25 at 1 p.m.; Wednesday, August 27 at 11 p.m., and Thursday, August 28 at 1 p.m. The one-hour show will also be aired on FOX Sports Net Detroit, Comcast Sports Net Chicago and Time Warner Cable/Western NY, with MAC fans in those areas asked to check their local listings for dates and times.
