OXFORD, Ohio -- The Miami University football team practiced twice today in extreme heat, practicing their execution in the "red zone" (inside the 20-yard line). The RedHawks' defensive unit excelled in the morning session, holding their offensive teammates in check.

QUOTING Shane Montgomery: "Through the first week of camp, our retention on both sides of the ball has been great. We have thrown at lot of plays and schemes at them. Our older players have retained almost everything they learned during the spring, and our younger guys are really picking it up quickly. The enthusiasm has been great, and they love competing against each other. At certain points in practice, we have to hold them off from each other, but their overall attitude and effort have been great.

"We're hanging in there as far as injuries go. Of the four guys who were out in the spring, Dustin Woods (Jr., WR, Cincinnati) and Joe Hudson (Jr., LB, Piqua) are practicing full speed. Charlie Norden (Sr., OL, Dublin) and Matt McKeown (Jr., OL, Cincinnati) feel as good as they've felt in a long time. We are trying to be smart with them, making sure we don't wear them out. As you get into the middle of two-a-days, there are always bumps and bruises and injuries that keep people out from day to day, but, considering the heat, we're hanging in there pretty well."

YAGER JAMBOREE: More than 500 area Boy Scouts are expected to attend Miami University's "Night Under the Stars" at Yager Stadium, Friday, September 14. Scouts, ages seven to 18 years old, will set up tents at 7 p.m. that evening, then snack on hot dogs from John Morrell and pretzels from Snyder as they watch a movie on the video board inside Yager. After spending the night inside tents on the stadium grounds, breakfast will be served to the scouts by Miami student-athletes and coaches on Saturday morning. The scouts will lead the crowd in reciting the Pledge of Allegiance and displaying the flag before the Miami-Cincinnati game, then enjoy the match-up between the RedHawks and the Bearcats at 12 noon. The cost of the camp-out and ticket package for the scouts will be $20, while parents and chaperones can participate for just $15. Existing scouts must register by August 31, and new recruits will be extended until September 11. For more information, call (513) 529-4104.
