OXFORD, Ohio -- Hot, steamy conditions enveloped southwestern Ohio today as Miami University's 2007 football team went through its fourth on-field practice. Temperatures reached into the low 90s, with the heat index registering at nearly 100 degrees. The humidity factor was more than 80% . The team continued to practice in shorts, shoulder pads, and helmets.

DEFENSIVE LINE COACH Rusty Wright: "We have a lot more defensive linemen than we've had in the past, so we're aiming to create some quality depth at all of our individual positions. We only have one senior and a couple of juniors. The rest of them are underclassmen, so we need to fill our various roles and needs. Right now, it looks like Joe Coniglio (Jr., Rockford, IL) will start at one end for us. He's a little undersized, but he's got a great motor and that will compensate for his size. Ben Huddle (Jr., Columbus) is starting right now for us at the three-technique position. The main thing with Ben is that we need to keep him healthy throughout the year. Mark Paun (So., Strongsville) and Martin Channels (So., Xenia) are sharing the nose tackle position so far. At the other end is Travis Craven (So., Fort Wayne, IN). Travis has probably taken bigger steps than anyone towards becoming a great player at this level. Besides those five, D.J. Svabik (Fr., Van Wert, OH) has really impressed us with his athletic ability."

TV UPDATE.: Miami's home football games vs. Syracuse on Sept. 29 (3 p.m. ET) and vs. Buffalo on Nov. 3 (3 p.m. ET) will be televised by the Ohio News Network (ONN). That means that eight of Miami's 12 games will be on TV. The RedHawks' other TV games include Minnesota on Sept. 8 (Big Ten Network), Cincinnati on Sept. 15 (ESPN Regional), Kent State on Oct. 6 (FSN-Ohio), Bowling Green State on Oct. 13 (FSN-Ohio), Temple on Oct. 20 (ESPN Regional), and Akron on Nov. 14 (ESPN2).

REDHAWK GRAD ASSISTANTS : J.D. VONDERHEIDE and CHARLES BYRD serve as graduate assistant coaches for Shane Montgomery in 2007. Vonderheide, who is in his second season with the RedHawks' coaching staff, will help work with the quarterbacks. He was a three-time letter-winning QB at Miami from 1999-2003. Vonderheide was at the College of Wooster from 2004-2006, serving as Wooster's special teams coordinator, wide receiver coach, and video coordinator. Prior to his position as a G.A., Byrd was an intern with MU athletics' strength and conditioning department. The 2000 graduate of Talawanda High School was an all-star defensive back at Morehead State from 2002-2005. Byrd was invited to tryout camps with the Cleveland Browns, Green Bay Packers and Washington Redskins before becoming a member of the professional indoor league's Las Vegas Gladiators.
