July 30, 2007

OXFORD, Ohio -- Head football coach Shane Montgomery greets more than 100 student-athletes to Miami University's campus this week as preparations begin in earnest for the 2007 season.

Players check in at Yager Stadium Thursday afternoon (Aug. 2) for physicals and issuance of equipment, then hit the practice field Friday (Aug. 3) at approximately 4 p.m. Afternoon practices also will be held the following Saturday, Sunday and Monday, with a morning practice scheduled for next Tuesday. The practice schedule for the remaining portion of fall football drills will be determined at a later date.

Leading the way for the 2007 RedHawks are offensive all-star candidates quarterback Mike Kokal (Sr., Warren), running back Brandon Murphy (Sr., Strongsville) and offensive tackle Charlie Norden (Sr., Dublin). Defensive stalwarts include end Joe Coniglio (Jr., Rockford, Ill.), middle linebacker Joey Hudson (Jr., Piqua), oustside linebacker Clayton Mullins (Jr., Fairborn) and strong safety Robbie Wilson (Jr., Cincinnati).

"When you look back at last year (2-10 overall record), we had a very uncharacteristic Miami season," said Montgomery. "We had a young team and a lot of injuries. But we have had a great off-season, making a lot of progress in the spring, and we anticipate that we'll continue to improve in fall drills. We feel like we have a lot of talent coming back. Just like last year, the race in the Mid-American Conference is wide open. We know that we've got a challenging season ahead, but we also realize the opportunity that we have. Our team is excited to get started."

The RedHawks open the 2007 campaign on Thursday, Aug. 30, at Ball State. The first home game at Yager Stadium is noon on Saturday, Sept. 15, against Cincinnati. Other Miami home contests include Syracuse (Sept. 29, 3 p.m.), Bowling Green State (Oct. 13, 3 p.m.), Buffalo (Nov. 3, 3 p.m.) and Akron (Nov. 14, 7:30 p.m.).
