OXFORD< OHIO - Coach Shane Montgomery's football team held its first scrimmage of the spring Saturday, leaving the fourth-year coach encouraged with his squad's progress.
Cold temperatures and a brisk wind were in the face of the RedHawk players all afternoon, making offensive play difficult, but there were several positive results. The longest play of the afternoon was a 57-yard touchdown strike from Clay Belton to Jamal Rogers.
"I thought we did some good things on both sides of the ball," said Montgomery. "Offensively, we moved the ball pretty well throughout the day. The one thing we need to improve upon is scoring when we get in the red zone. We don't have our total offensive package in, but we're getting close. We need to see who our starters are going to be up front and who our depth will be. We want to feel good about seven-to-nine linemen going into the season. Both Daniel Raudabaugh and Clay Belton played well throughout the afternoon, and threw the ball well, despite the wind and the cold weather. And I thought we ran the ball well. That's our most inexperienced position on the team and we have to continue to develop guys there."
"Defensively, we did some good things." Montgomery said. "Today, it was more of a bend but not break effort, but Coach (Jay) Hood tells the guys to make our opponent play another play and keep them out of the endzone."
Defensively, lineman Alex Stewart had four tackles for loss.
Kicking-wise, Nathan Parseghian connected on several field goals, including a 50-yarder with the wind. Trevor Cook had a 42-yarder among his many successful kicks.
