An extensive number of Miami University alumni in Oxford and beyond are smiling proudly following the New Orleans Saints' 31-17 triumph over the Indianapolis Colts in Super Bowl LXIV.
Six different members of the Saints coaching staff including Head Coach Sean Payton, who was Randy Walker's offensive coordinator at Miami from 1994-95, spent time on the Oxford campus at one time or another during the past several years.
Payton is the second Miamian to earn a Super Bowl ring as a head coach, joining Weeb Ewbank who led the New York Jets past the Baltimore Colts in the 1969 classic.
A list of the Miamians and their contributions in Super Sunday's victory:
SEAN PAYTON: his brilliant play calling resulted in 332 yards of offense and 31 points against a stingy Colts defensive unit.
Bret Ingalls (MU assistant coach in 2005): his New Orleans running backs, Pierre Thomas and Reggie Bush, gained valuable yardage on the ground and as receivers.
AARON KROMER (MU player from 1986-89 and MU assistant coach from 1992-98): his Saints offensive line protected Drew Brees and allowed their MVP quarterback to complete 32-of-39 passes for 288 yards.
MIKE MALLORY (son of former Miami coach Bill Mallory): the primary tutor of placekicker Garrett Hartley, who had a Super Bowl-record three field goals of 44+ yards and two PATs, and punter Glenn Pakulak, who averaged 45 yards per punt. Tom Morstead also successfully converted an on-sides kick that the Saints recovered at the beginning of the second half.
Dan Dalrymple (MU player from 1983-86 and MU's strength and conditioning coach from 1989-2005) and Charles Byrd (MU defensive graduate assistant in 2007): their efforts in the weight room with New Orleans' players during the entire year helped the Saints dominate offensive and defensive line play.
