A disciple of head coach Terry Hoeppner's defensive system, Jon Wauford
enters his third season as Miami's defensive coordinator.
In his first year (1999) with the RedHawks, when he served as the
defensive line coach, Wauford's young defensive line helped Miami rack up 39
pass sacks, six shy of the school's single-season record. Defensive tackle
Andy Aracri earned first-team all-MAC honors and ranked among the nation's
leaders in tackles for loss.
A 1995 Miami graduate, Wauford was a three-time all-Mid-American Conference
selection at defensive end from 1988-91. He was Miami's Vern Smith (MAC
Player of the Year) nominee in 1990.
Wauford, who totaled 291 tackles, ranks among Miami's all-time leaders in
quarterback sacks and tackles for loss. He is first on the RedHawks' career
list for sacks (35) and sack yardage (240), and ranks second in tackle for
loss yardage (298) and third in tackles for loss (56).
One of four defensive linemen tabbed for the squad, Wauford was named to
the Cincinnati Enquirer's all-20th Century Miami football team.
The Findlay, Ohio, native played professionally in the Canadian Football
League for three seasons. After two years with Ottawa, he closed his
professional career with the CFL's Las Vegas franchise.
In 1995, Wauford became the defensive line coach at the University of
Findlay, where he helped guide the Oilers to an NAIA Division II National
Championship in 1995 and an NAIA National Championship in 1997. He also
served as a severe behavioral handicapped specialist for Findlay City
Schools during that same period.
Wauford, who earned his undergraduate degree in English education, went on
to earn a master's in special education from Findlay.
A 1988 graduate of Findlay High School, Wauford was a three-time
all-conference selection as both a tailback and linebacker. In 1988, he was
named the Defensive Player of the Year for the Buckeye Central Conference.
Wauford and his wife, Ivy, have one child, Alexis Joan (3). They reside in
Oxford.
