Coaching staff planned to redshirt him but when quarterback Mike Bath was ailing with injuries and the RedHawks were still in the hunt for the MAC’s East Division crown in November, Hawk made his collegiate debut against Ohio (Nov. 4) ... his debut, however, began on an inauspicious note as his first pass attempt, off a halfback option, went for an interception ... he did gain 10 rushing yards on four carries against the Bobcats ... was 0-for-1 passing with three rushing yards at Marshall (Nov. 11).
High School
Four-year starting quarterback and two-year captain for the Elks … holds Centerville records for career passing yards (5,013), single-season passing yards (1,557), career touchdown passes (42), single-season touchdown passes (15), single-game touchdown passes (4) and single-game rushing touchdowns (6) … completed at least one pass in all 43 games in which he played … also rushed for 923 yards and 23 touchdowns as a senior … named Dayton Daily News and Southwest Ohio Player of the Year ... first-team all-state quarterback as a senior … three-time all-league and two-time Offensive MVP of league … led Elks to 21-3 record over 1998-99 seasons, including two league championships and state playoff appearances … participating in 2000 Ohio North-South All-Star game … threw a TD in the North-South game ... received Centerville’s Sonny Unger and Terry Weiland Memorial Awards, recognizing character, leadership and on-field performance … also received scholarship offers from Air Force, Akron, Army, Ball State, Bowling Green, Indiana, Kent, Navy, Northwestern, Ohio and Toledo … coached by Bob Gregg … also earned two letters as a guard in basketball.
