Akron Holds Off RedHawks, 58-55





AKRON, Ohio (AP) -- Unable to score itself over the final 1:12 of the game, Miami allowed Akron to knock down four points during that span and fell to the Zips 58-55.

Rashon Brown scored 16 points including two free throws with four seconds left as Akron held on to beat Miami University 58-55 Saturday.

Doug Davis' jumper gave Miami a 55-54 lead with 1:12 left. After being fouled, Byron Thompson made both free throws to put the Zips up 56-55 with 37 seconds left.

Miami's Alex Shorts missed a 16-foot baseline jumper with six seconds left and Akron's Bruce Weinkein got the rebound and passed to Brown.

Akron opened up a 14-6 lead on a 10-0 run midway throught the first half. Miami, however, put together a 10-3 run to close the gap, 20-23 heading into the half.

Larry Drake sparked the RedHawks early in the second half with two three-point shots to help lift Miami to 36-31 advantage, its largest lead of the game. No team held more that a four-point advantage from that point on.

For Akron, senior Nate Schindewolf, who transfered from Miami his freshman year, scored 13 points, including three 3-pointers, and Emmanuel Smith added 10 points for Akron (11-12, 8-6 in the Mid-American Conference).

Alex Shorts led the RedHawks with 14 points and eight rebounds. Julius Johnson scored 11 points for Miami (13-13, 9-6).

Miami had 16 offensive rebounds and forced Akron to commit 13 turnovers.

The RedHawk's defense allowed Miami to take 20 more shots than Akron but the Zips made 8-of-14 3-point attempts compared 5-of-16 for the RedHawks.
