OXFORD, Ohio (Feb. 3, 2001) -- Miami University fell to MAC rival Bowling Green in overtime, 67-63, Saturday afternoon at Millett Hall. Alex Shorts led the RedHawks with 21 points and Jason Grunkemeyer added 15 points.

Bowling Green's Len Matela had 19 points--including two free throws that sent the game into overtime--to lead the Falcons.

It was the second time in a row the teams went to overtime, and the third time in their last five meetings.

Shorts scored 17 of his game-high 21 points in the second half and overtime. It was Shorts' eighth straight game in double digits.

Bowling Green (10-12, 6-5 MAC) grabbed the lead with 7:50 left in the first half on a layup by Josh Almanson. The Falcons held onto the lead until Shorts' second-half jumper with 8:21 left in the second half put Miami up by one.

Matela hit two free throws with 8 seconds left and Matt Jameson missed a jumper 4 seconds later that could have given the RedHawks the win. The Falcons' Trent Jackson pulled down the rebound, running out the clock with the teams tied at 58.

The score was tied again at 63 with 2:13 remaining in overtime, but Keith McLeod made three free throws in the last 34 seconds--11 of his 15 points were from the line. Jameson also missed a three-point attempt in the final seconds of overtime, which would have knotted the game at 66-66. Ryan Cory scored the clinching point with 3 seconds remaining.

Miami had a two-game winning streak stopped for the fourth time this season. Three times, Miami has failed to extend a two-game winning streak when playing on its homecourt. The Falcons, the defending MAC champion, have now won two straight games for the first time this year.

Miami must now play five of its last seven MAC games on the road, beginning with Wednesday's stiff challenge at East-leading Kent State (15-6, 8-2 MAC). The Golden Flashes handed Toledo a 68-54 setback on Saturday.
