OXFORD, Ohio (AP) -- Miami turned in its worst offensive performance of the season and lost a disappointing 56-46 decision at home to Akron Wednesday night. The RedHawks shot 31 percent from the field and only registered three assists.
Nate Schindewolf, who played his freshman season at Miami, scored 15 points and was 4-of-5 from 3-point range to lead the Zips to the MAC East Division victory.
Rashon Brown added 14 points and was 12-of-12 at the free throw line.
Miami (8-11, 4-4 MAC) was ahead 37-36 with 5:39 left to play when a dunk by Larry Penn started an 11-0 run to put Akron (7-9, 4-3) ahead 47-37 with 2:07 remaining. The Zips held the lead the rest of the way.
Miami, which started the night by missing its first seven field goal attempts, held a 23-16 lead at halftime.
While the RedHawks were struggling with their shooting, Akron wasn't much better. The Zips shot 33 percent.
Mike Ensminger led scoring for Miami with 11 points, while Alex Shorts added 10. Shorts and Jason Grunkemeyer, Miami's two leading scorers, went a combined 3-for-21 from the field.
Ensminger, Bryan Reed and Rich Allendorf led the game in rebounds with seven each. Klaas Zollner grabbed six rebounds to lead Akron.
Akron shot 35 percent from 3-point range, including 5-of-8 in the second half, while Miami made only 20 percent of its 3-pointers.
Miami closes out its four-game homestand with Ball State at 1 p.m. Saturday, Jan. 27. This is a rematch of last year's MAC Tournament championship game.
