THE GAME
Miami caps its one-month, seven-game road stretch by opening Mid-American Conference play at Western Michigan and defending MAC West Division Champion Central Michigan this week. The RedHawks face the Broncos at 7 p.m. on Wednesday, Jan. 2 to open their league schedule and battle the Chippewas at 3:30 p.m. on Saturday. WMU (6-5) lost its MAC opener to Marshall 77-73 on Dec. 22. Central Michigan opens conference play with Bowling Green on Thursday. The RedHawks try to rebound from a rough 60-23 loss at Dayton on Saturday, and their poorest shooting performance of the season (.133). Alex Shorts leads the RedHawks averaging 15.5 points per game, while Juby Johnson follows with 9.0 ppg. Danny Horace grabs a team-best 7.2 rebounds per game. Western Michigan suffered a 100-94 overtime loss at Oakland on Saturday, but had its greatest scoring output of the season. Prior to the Marshall loss, WMU had won six of its last seven games, with its only blemish during that stretch at the hands of Detroit (62-67). Three Broncos average double figures in scoring, led by Steve Reynolds' 16.5 ppg. Robby Collum posts 13.1 ppg and 3.9 assists per game, while hitting 41.7 percent of his three-point shots. Ben Reed is the other Bronco averaging double figures in scoring with 12.0 ppg. He also ranks second in rebounds per game (6.9) behind Taylor Bro's 8.2 boards per outing.
