Adam Thomas--July 15, 2009
So far it's been a relatively uneventful summer.
I just started a summer school class--ITS 201, which is an intro course in international studies. It's been a challenging class because of the amount of reading we do for it. This may be the toughest class I've had at Miami yet, in terms of the amount of work we do for the class.
One of my main goals has been to put on some extra weight and get a lot stronger this summer. A big part of that is how I've changed my diet. I'm eating every two hours, spreading it out over the day and not eating a lot at one time. I eat lots of protein and complex carbohydrates. So far I've gained 23 pounds.
I don't think you can ever be too strong, and our strength coach, Ryan Faehnle, designed an intense workout for us this summer. I've seen a huge improvement in my strength. Actually, everyone's numbers are going up ... I think our numbers in the weight room might be the best they've ever been.
Those of us who are on campus do drill work together and also play pick-up games as much as we can. The incoming freshmen are on campus now and we've had a chance to work out and play some pick-up games with them. They are very talented and very strong as freshmen, and they are fitting in very well.
Individually, I've been working a lot on ball handling and shooting. I've been trying to shoot over 3,000 3-pointers a week. Hopefully I can start contributing more. Losing as many seniors as we did to graduation, I'm looking to try to help carry some of the weight next year.
While I'm taking classes, I've been staying in Eaton (Ohio) with my uncle. He has a few rental properties in Oxford, so I've been working for him painting, putting down wood floors, cleaning and just helping him get them ready for the students to return. It's been good to be able to earn some extra money.
Later this summer, I'm going to Myrtle Beach with Adam Fletcher and his family. They rented a house on the beach and that will be nice to get away for a while before things start back up in late August.
This is a continuation of a series of updates from the Miami University men's basketball players throughout the summer.
