CLEVELAND-Miami University guard Juby Johnson (Warrensville Heights, Ohio/Warrensville Heights) earned second-team all-Mid-American Conference accolades, the conference office announced Wednesday. Johnson is the first RedHawk to earn second team honors since Alex Shorts in 2001. Last season, Doug Davis was an honorable mention pick.
Johnson led Miami in scoring in 13 contests this season and recorded 21 double-figure scoring games. He paced Miami in scoring, averaging 14.9 points per game during the regular season and 15.7 points per game in MAC action. Johnson notched five 20-plus point scoring efforts this season, including three straight games with 20 or more points. In Miami's 500th MAC win over Eastern Michigan on Jan. 29, Johnson poured in a career-high-tying 26 points. Following his most recent 21-point effort, a 69-49 win over Marshall on Feb. 15, Johnson was tabbed Mid-American Conference East Division Player of the Week. Miami's top defensive player, Johnson typically draws the toughest defensive assignments and has held 21 players under their scoring averages over 27 games.
As a freshman, Johnson was named to the MAC All-Freshman Team. Earlier this week Miami guard Josh Hausfeld was named to the MAC All-Freshman Team.
Johnson joined Akron's Derrick Tarver, Central Michigan's Mike Manciel, Eastern Michigan's Ryan Prillman and Marshall's Ronald Blackshear on the All-MAC Second Team. Ball State's Chris Williams, Central Michigan's Chris Kaman, who also was the MAC Player of the Year and Defensive Player of the Year, Kent State's Antonio Gates, Northern Illinois' Marcus Smallwood and Ohio's Brandon Hunter were the first-team selections. Akron's Johnny Hollingsworth, Bowling Green's Kevin Netter, Buffalo's Turner Battle, Central Michigan's J.R. Wallace, Kent State's Eric Haut, Northern Illinois' P.J. Smith, Toledo's Nick Moore and Keith Triplett and Western Michigan's Robby Collum and Anthony Kann made up the honorable mention team.
