THE GAME
Concluding its five-game, 11-day stretch at 7 p.m. Saturday at Kent State, Miami (11-13, 8-5 Mid-American Conference) tries to rebound from an 82-74 loss at Marshall on Thursday night. Trying to win at East Division leader Kent State (19-5, 12-1 MAC), however, will be no small task. The Golden Flashes are on a 10-game win streak, have won 15 of their last 16 contests and are a perfect 9-0 at home this season.
Kent State posted a midweek win at Northern Illinois on Wednesday, 73-61. Andrew Mitchell, Antonio Gates and Tevor Huffman lead the Golden Flashes in scoring, averaging 15.8, 15.5 and 14.7 points per game, respectively. Gates also yields a team-best 8.4 rebounds per game.
For the RedHawks, Alex Shorts leads the team with 13.7 ppg, followed by Doug Davis (12.4 ppg) and Juby Johnson (10.8 ppg). In league action, Davis produces a team-best 16.2 ppg, while Shorts and Johnson average 12.2 ppg. Eugene Seals has been a force as of late for the RedHawks. In addition to providing solid defense against several of the league's top scorers, Seals is averaging 9.3 ppg, 7.9 rpg, 2.1 assists and steals per game and 1.9 blocks per game over the past seven games.
Boasting the MAC's top two defensive teams, Saturday's contest could prove to be a low-scoring affair. The Golden Flashes and RedHawks rank one and two, respectively, in scoring defense. Kent State allows just 61.3 ppg, while Miami gives up 67.6 ppg.
