OXFORD, Ohio--In its first exhibition game of the season, Miami University's men's basketball team defeated Saginaw Valley State University, 64-44, on Thursday evening at Millett Hall.
Junior forward Michael Bramos knocked down two quick 3-pointers to help Miami to an 8-6 advantage by the 15:30 mark. Miami was able to extend its lead to six points off a junior guard Kenny Hayes tip-in dunk with 12:23 remaining in the half, 16-10. A Dante Williams trey at 12:07 cut the RedHawk lead to three points, 16-13, but the Red and White surged ahead off a 15-0 run to post a 31-13 lead with 3:44 remaining in the half.
Six different Miami players tallied points during Miami's scoring flurry, including three consecutive 3-pointers by junior guard Carl Richburg, junior guard Eric Pollitz and junior guard Isiah Carson.
A pair of treys by SVSU's Lawrence Ross helped shrink the Miami lead to 34-22, which would be the halftime score.
In the second half, the teams traded points until a Bramos 3-point play gave the RedHawks a 48-31 lead midway through the second half. The Cardinals went on a 13-2 run to cut the Miami lead to six off a Mario Mackey trey at 4:48.
Senior forward Tim Pollitz hit a jumper at 4:28 to thwart the Cardinal run and ignite an 14-0 RedHawk run. Hayes drained a jumper, junior forward/center Tyler Dierkers added a dunk and Bramos drilled his fourth trey of the night to put the RedHawks up 59-44 at the 2:25 mark. Tim Pollitz added a jumper with 1:12 remaining and redshirt freshman forward Sean Mock drained a 3-pointer over the final seconds to put the final at 64-44.
