Box Score
AMHERST, N.Y. - A 17-2 run to start the second half lifted Miami to a 17-point lead over Buffalo, a lead the Bulls were unable to surmount as the RedHawks went on to claim the game, 66-52.
Neither team owned more that a three-point lead in the first stanza. A jumper by UB's Mark Bortz and a pair of free throws gave the Bulls a three-point edge, 21-18, with 3:25 to play. That, however, would be Buffalo's final lead of the game. The score was knotted, 23-23, until Alex Shorts capped his 12-point first-half scoring effort for the RedHawks with a jumper at the 1:15 mark to hand Miami the two-point edge going into the half.
A balanced offense attack by the RedHawks in the second half left the Bull defense off balance as Miami went on its 17-2 run to lift itself to a 17-point advantage by the 11:02 mark. Buffalo's two points came off two Bortz free throws as the Bulls failed to connect on a field goal until the 10:26 mark. However, the Bulls got hot after they hit their first field goal of the second half and outscored Miami 17-2 to cut the RedHawk lead to two, 44-42, by the 6:07 mark. Key free throws by Doug Davis and Danny Horace upped the RedHawk lead to six, and critical back-to-back three-point baskets from Davis and Larry Drake extended that lead to 10, 54-44. Miami drilled 12-of-13 free throws over the final 1:32. Davis scored 15 of his team-best 19 points in the second half.
Shorts added 16 points for the RedHawks. Eugene Seals posted a game-best eight rebounds, while Danny Horace notched eight points, six rebounds and three blocked shots en route to the win.
Bortz led Buffalo with a career-high 24 points, 13 of which
came in the first half.
