OXFORD, Ohio (AP) - Doug Davis scored 21 points, including four free throws
in the final 2:41, to lead Miami to an 80-77 victory over Ball State on
Saturday.
Miami did not score from the field in the final 3:51 after a dunk by Danny
Horace gave the RedHawks a 74-63 lead. But Alex Shorts hit two free throws, and
Davis was 4-for-4 and that was enough to hold off the Ball State rally.
Horace finished with 20 points for Miami (8-11, 5-3 Mid-American
Conference), Juby Johnson had 13 and Shorts 10.
Theron Smith led Ball State (13-6, 6-2 MAC) with 20 points. Patrick Jackson
added 18, Chris Williams 15 and Brian Burns 10. The loss ended Ball State's
six-game winning streak, and was the Cardinals' 10th straight loss in Oxford.
Miami used three 8-0 runs to take a 49-35 lead at halftime, the RedHawks'
biggest first-half point total and lead of the season, but was outscored 42-31
in the second half. The RedHawks' 52.8 shooting percentage from the field was thier best effort of the season.
Horace was 9-for-9 from the field but fouled out when he was given a
technical foul for hanging on the rim following the dunk that gave Miami an
11-point lead. Ball State outscored Miami 14-6 after that but missed two
3-point shots in the final five seconds.
