OXFORD, Ohio -- John Ely (Homewood, Ill./Flossmoor), a freshman on Miami University's baseball team, has been tabbed as a freshman all-American by the editors of Baseball America. A first-team selection, he was the only player from the Mid-American Conference to earn a place on either the first or second team.
A righthander, Ely went 10-2 for the Red and White this season and led the team with 108 strikeouts in just 103.1 innings. His 10 wins tied him with sophomore Keith Weiser (Hamilton, Ohio/Talawanda) for the most by any pitcher in the Mid-American Conference this season and for the second-best single-season total in Miami history. He completed a league-best six games and limited opposition batters to a .216 average.
Ely was one of eight RedHawks to earn all-MAC honors this season, as he was named to the conference's second team, and also earned a spot on the MAC's All-Tournament team after picking up two victories during Miami's title run.
