Former Miami outfielder and ninth-round pick of the Chicago White Sox in the 2003 First-Year Player Draft, David Cook, was called up to the Triple-A Charlotte Knights on June 11 from the Double-A affiliate, Birmingham Barons.
Prior to his recent call up, Cook was batting .313 for the Barons with 12 home runs and 30 RBIs. Cook's 12 home runs led the squad and his 62 walks heading into Birmingham's game against the Montgomery Biscuits on June 10 were the most walks in the Southern League. In a 4-3 win over the Biscuits on June 10, Cook was the only Baron to register a multi-hit game and he drove in three runs, including the game-winning walk-off sacrifice fly in the 10th inning. During the game, Cook extended his on-base streak to 24 games.
Also with the White Sox organization, 2007 third-round selection, John Ely, continued his strong pitching for the Class-A Winston-Salem Warthogs after earning a win over the Wilmington Blue Rocks on June 12. Ely struck out eight batters and gave up just one hit in 7.0 innings of work. Ely gave up a two-out first inning hit before retiring 19 consecutive batters before being pulled in the eighth inning.
