OXFORD, Ohio - Miami University junior Keith Weiser (Hamilton, Ohio) has been selected in the third round of the Major League Baseball First-Year Player Draft by the Colorado Rockies, becoming the second RedHawk hurler to be taken in this year's draft after Matt Long went in the second round to the Chicago White Sox.
A two-time First Team All-Mid-American Conference selection, Weiser is no stranger to the draft as he was selected in 2003 by the Atlanta Braves in the 18th round following his senior year at Talawanda High School.
As a freshman at Miami in 2004, Weiser posted a record of 8-3 on his way to earning all-MAC first-team and MAC Freshman of the Year honors. In 2005 he posted one of the finest seasons in Miami history, going 10-0 with a 2.73 earned-run average and helping Miami to both the MAC regular-season and tournament titles, while again earning first-team all-conference accolades.
In his three season in Red and White, Weiser posted a record of 21-9 with a 3.69 ERA and ranks sixth in Miami history with 282.2 innings pitched. His 21 victories are just one shy of cracking Miami's career top 10 and his 227 career strikeouts rank him seventh on the school's career charts.
The 78th overall selection in this year's draft, Weiser becomes the 19th RedHawk to be selected in the draft in the past seven years.
