OXFORD, Ohio--Three Miami University baseball players earned All-Mid-American Conference honors, the conference office announced Wednesday morning. Junior pitcher John Ely (Homewood, Ill./Flossmoor) earned first-team All-MAC honors for the second straight year, while sophomore shortstop Jordan Petraitis (Canal Fulton, Ohio/Manchester) also earned first-team All-MAC plaudits. Senior first baseman Jeff Carroll (Columbus, Ohio/Bishop Watterson) was a second-team All-MAC selection.
Ely was one of eight unanimous first-team selections. He made 13 appearances during the regular season, forging a 7-3 record on the mound for the RedHawks. In his first win of the season, Ely pitched a complete game in a 6-2 win against then-No. 12 Texas. Entering the MAC Tournament, Ely ranks sixth on Miami's single-season list with 90 strikeouts this season and is just four strikeouts away from tying for second on Miami's career strikeout chart. He has registered more strikeouts than any other RedHawk over a three-year span. Ely also ranks 10th at Miami in career innings pitched. Ely ranks among Mid-American Conference statistical leaders in ERA, wins, innings pitched, strikeouts, games started, complete games and opponent batting average. Twice this season he was tabbed MAC East Division Pitcher of the Week, earning the honor on April 23 and 30.
Petraitis emerged as one of Miami's most consistent hitters this season. He recorded a 27-game hitting streak from March 21 to May 9, which is unofficially the third-longest by any Division I player this season and was the longest active streak at the time. He recorded hits in 42 of the RedHawks' 53 games and was one of just three RedHawks to play in all 53 regular-season games. Entering the MAC Tournament, Petraitis has made 52 consecutive starts for the RedHawks. He ranks among MAC statistical leaders triples in all games and in batting average and triples in league-only games. Recording four triples on the season, Petraitis is tied for 10th on Miami's single-season list and has helped Miami to a No. 15 national ranking in the category.
Carroll leads Miami in batting average, posting a .341 average in all games and a .370 average in MAC-only games. From March 15-31, Carroll put together a 10-game hitting streak. He has recorded multiple hits in 16 games, including a team-leading seven three-hit outings. Carroll also recorded 11 multiple-RBI games to rank second on the team. Entering the MAC Tournament, Carroll has amassed 429 putouts and 38 assists while making just five fielding errors, which has helped Miami rank first in the conference and among national leaders in fielding percentage.
