CLEVELAND - Juniors Mike Galloway (St. Thomas, Ontario/Central Michigan) and Michael Carlin (Pittsburgh, Pa./Mt. Lebanon) were named to the First-Team All-Mid-American Conference baseball team this afternoon while senior hurler Shawn Landis (Pleasant Hill, Ohio/Dayton) earned second-team honors. This is Galloway's second first-team selection while Carlin and Landis earn their first all-league honors.
Carlin is named to the first-team as a designated hitter after belting out a team-high 15 home runs, tying for the lead with fellow first-teamer Galloway. Carlin also is ranked 10th in the MAC with a .651 slugging percentage, and is tied for sixth in the conference with nine dingers in league action. Twice this season Carlin has belted three round-trippers in a contest, and is tied with three other RedHawks with four three-baggers. His three-run home run in the 10th inning at Northern Kentucky (March 5) gave the Red and White a 19-15 victory.
"Even after a slow start this season Michael has turned it around to have an incredible season," assistant coach Dan Simonds says. "Michael is very deserving of this award."
An NCAA Louisville Slugger Freshman All-American and first-team selection at Central Michigan Galloway garners his second first-team honor in 2002 by leading the conference with a .436 batting average entering the tournament. His versatility with the RedHawks this season led to his being named the MAC's top utility player. He has started all 57 games this season for the RedHawks, 32 as a first baseman, 15 behind the plate, nine at third, and one as a designated hitter. Galloway also leads the MAC in hits and runs scored. Already leading the Red and White in 13 offensive categories Galloway is fast approaching several single-season records at Miami.
"Galloway has been a great addition to our team and has done everything that we expected of him," Simonds says. "He is legitimate professional prospect."
Landis has come out of the bullpen and been perfect in all five of his starts for the RedHawks. He has posted a team-low 3.95 earned run average while running up a perfect 7-0 mark on the hill. For the past two and a half seasons Landis has been a stalwart reliever for the RedHawks tossing 10 wins while never losing in the Red and White uniform. In six conference starts Landis has continued is outstanding pitching by leading the conference with 6-0 tally.
"This post-season award is more of a team award than an individual award," Landis says. "If [the team] didn't score runs for me I very well could be 1-5 instead of 6-0. This is a good reflection on the team and not necessarily me personally."
After losing its first-round game this afternoon 15-6 to top-seed Bowling Green the RedHawks square off against No. 2 Eastern Michigan at 10 a.m. on BGSU's Warren Steller Field. Slated to start for Miami is second-team selection Landis.
