REDHAWKS HOST BOWLING GREEN IN KEY WEEKEND SERIES: With four series remaining in Mid-American Conference play, Miami welcomes Bowling Green to McKie Field at Hayden Park for a pivotal three-game series beginning Friday at 6 p.m. Saturday's and Sunday's game will begin at 6 p.m. and 1 p.m., respectively. The RedHawks currently stand three and a half games back of Bowling Green for the all-important third position in the MAC East standings.
ABOUT THE FALCONS: After being swept last weekend by Kent State, Bowling Green has responded in a big way by defeating Albion and Oakland by a combined score of 35-7 this week. Ryan Shay leads the Falcons with a .390 batting average and a team-high 13 doubles. Shay also has 57 hits this season, 14 more hits than any other Falcon player. Brian Hangbers and Derek Spencer provide a bulk of the power for Bowling Green as both players have seven home runs apiece on the season.
THE SERIES WITH BOWLING GREEN: The RedHawks lead the all-time series, 79-54, including a 45-17 advantage when playing in Oxford. Miami has won eight consecutive meetings over Bowling Green, with the last Falcon win occurring on May 6, 2005.
WEEKEND SERIES TO BE CARRIED ON MSNi: Miami's weekend series against Bowling Green can be heard on the Miami Sports Network Internet Channel, which can be accessed through www.MURedHawks.com. Randy Hollowell will have the play-by-play all weekend long.
`32 ALUM TO THROW OUT FIRST PITCH: On Sunday, April 27, Clarence Wheeler, a 1932 Miami University alumnus and former Miami baseball player will throw out the first pitch for Miami's 1 p.m. contest against Bowling Green. On Sunday, Wheeler celebrates his 100th birthday with the Miami University baseball family. Wheeler is the oldest known Miami University baseball alum.
ERWOOD HAS CAREER GAME: Senior Matt Erwood put together a career performance against Buffalo on Friday, April 18. The southpaw pitched a career-high 7 2/3 innings and struck out a career-best 10 batters. Erwood became the first pitcher since John Ely on April 29, 2007 to strike out 10 or more batters in a game. In his last two outings, Erwood has a 1.93 ERA, 15 strikeouts and no walks.
EUBANK CLUTCH IN COMEBACK WIN: Sophomore Ben Eubank was an integral part of Miami's come-from-behind win over Xavier on Wednesday. Eubank had a career-high three-hits, including his first career home run at Miami, a career-high four RBIs, while tying a career-best with two runs scored. The biggest hit of them all came in the eighth inning with the RedHawks trailing by two. Eubank delivered a double down the left field line that scored two runners to tie the game at 7-7. During the next at-bat, Eubank scored the go-ahead run on a double by freshman Adam Eaton.
THERE IS A FIRST TIME FOR EVERYTHING: The RedHawks have hit a home run in three consecutive games and in two of those games, two Miami players hit their first career home runs. In Tuesday's game against Indiana State, freshman Jon Edgington hit a full-count breaking ball over the left field fence for his first career home run as a RedHawk. The next day, sophomore Ben Eubank delivered his first career round-tripper on the first pitch he saw.
HITTING THE BOOKS: Junior Jordan Petraitis has been a staple in the Miami lineup since he stepped on campus three years ago and he is approaching the Miami career record books. Petraitis needs one triple, two doubles and 18 hits to move into Miami's Top 10 lists on those respective charts. Petraitis also needs two more doubles to tie for 10th on the single-season doubles list. Senior Bobby Oberschlake has already moved his way into the career record books in appearances. Oberschlake has made 69 appearances in his career, which ranks fifth on Miami's all-time list.
MAC-NIFICIENT FRESHMAN: Despite struggling on the mound in non-conference action, freshman Samuel Dawes has been Miami's top pitcher out of the bullpen in Mid-American Conference play. In eight appearances in conference action, the freshman southpaw has given up just four earned runs in 15 2/3 innings. In MAC-only contests, Dawes ranks fourth in the conference in ERA (2.30), tied for second in appearances (8), fourth in opponent's batting average (.210) and fourth in strikeouts per game (8.62 SO/G).
CAREER AVERAGES AGAINST BOWLING GREEN: 10 RedHawk players have has at least one at-bat against the Falcons, with junior Jordan Petraitis and senior Evan Armitage having the most success. Sophomore Reece Asbury has thrown the most innings against the Falcons, while five other RedHawk hurlers have only thrown a maximum of 1.1 innings against the Orange and Brown.
