OXFORD, Ohio (April 6) -- Miami University's baseball team snapped its season-high four-game losing streak in game one of its doubleheader with Ball State, 4-1, but dropped the nightcap 12-7 Friday afternoon at Stanley G. McKie Field. Miami now stands at 13-15 and 2-4 in the Mid-American Conference, while Ball State moved to 15-15 and 6-2 in MAC play.
Miami was paced in game one by sophomore pitcher Chris Leonard (Columbus, Ohio/St. Francis DeSales), who went the distance to up his record to 6-1. The southpaw allowed only six hits, while striking out eight and walking none to notch his fourth complete game of the year and ninth of his career.
Ball State starter Bryan Bullington was equally impressive, allowing only five hits and no earned runs. However, Miami took advantage of a bases-loaded, two-out error in the fifth inning to get on the scoreboard. Shortstop Jeremy Ison (Hudson, Ohio/Hudson) followed with a three-run double to center field, giving the RedHawks a 4-0 lead.
The Cardinals plated a run in the sixth, but Leonard sat the side down in order in the seventh to seal the RedHawk victory.
In game two, Ball State was fast out of the gates, scoring in each of the first three innings to grab a 5-0 advantage it would not relinquish.
The RedHawks notched a run in the fifth when Justin Knoedler (Springfield, Ill./Springfield/Lincoln Land C.C.) led off the inning with a double down the left field line and scored two batters later on David Cook's (Columbus, Ohio/St. Francis DeSales) sacrifice fly to right.
Miami added two more in the sixth on Ison's team-high-tying sixth home run of the season, a two-run blast to left center.
The RedHawks cut the deficit to 5-4 an inning later when Clark Mace (London, Ohio/Madison Plains) drove an RBI-single through the right side.
However, Ball State iced the win in the top of the eighth, scoring seven runs on five hits. The inning was interrupted by a one hour and 32 minute rain delay with two outs. The Cardinals tallied six of their seven runs after the game resumed.
Miami, too, was swinging hot bats after the delay, as they scored three runs on three hits in the bottom of the eighth to close the deficit to 12-7. However, that would be as close as the RedHawks would get as the game ended with a scoreless ninth.
Miami travels to Ball State to close the weekend home-and-home set with a pair of games at 1 p.m. Sunday.
