Despite facing a bases-loaded, one out situation in the top of the first inning, Miami was able to escape the frame trailing only 1-0. The RedHawks answered in the second as Jason Knoedler (Springfield, Ill./Springfield/Lincoln Land C.C.) tallied an RBI double to left, tying the game at 1-1.
Butler regained the lead for good in the third when shortstop Jared Lowe singled to left, giving the Bulldogs a 2-1 advantage.
Miami starter Mark Floersch (Winnetka, Ill./New Trier) scattered four hits over 5.1 innings, but walked five and allowed four runs (three earned) to pick up his first loss of the season.
Butler struck for the last time in the top of the seventh when center fielder Jeremy Sinsabaugh unleashed a two-run blast that put the Bulldogs up 6-1.
Miami rallied for three runs in the bottom of the seventh to close the margin to 6-4, highlighted by Jeremy Ison's (Hudson, Ohio/Hudson) two-run single to right center.
However, Miami was not able to muster a base-runner the rest of the way as Butler iced the victory. Bulldog closer Neal Walther pitched a perfect ninth to collect his fourth save of the season.
Offensively, Jason Knoedler led the RedHawk effort, going 3-for-4 with a double, a run scored and an RBI.
Miami opens Mid-American Conference play this weekend at home versus Western Michigan. Game times are slated for 3 p.m. Friday, a 1 p.m. doubleheader Saturday and 1 p.m. Sunday.
