CLARKSVILLE, Tenn. (March 24) -- Miami University's baseball team used a six-run seventh inning to erase a 5-1 deficit and held on to defeat Austin Peay 10-6 Saturday afternoon at Raymond C. Hand Park. The comeback victory raised Miami's record to 9-9, marking the first time the RedHawks have reached the .500 mark since moving to 4-4 on March 10.
Miami's rally in the seventh was sparked by eight RedHawk hits, the most Miami has collected in any inning this season. The RedHawks' first four runners of the inning reached base, narrowing the Austin Peay (15-8) lead to 5-2 with the bases loaded and nobody out.
It appeared the Governors might escape the inning with minimal damage when they turned a double play on Brady Nori's (Middletown, Ohio/Middletown) line drive to first base. However, Clark Mace (London, Ohio/Madison Plains) narrowed the gap to 5-4 with a two-run triple. Jeremy Ison (Hudson, Ohio/Hudson) then gave Miami its first lead of the game with a two-run home run to left field that was followed by a Justin Knoedler (Springfield, Ill./Springfield/Lincoln Land C.C.) solo blast, capping the Miami comeback.
Despite having its lead cut to 7-6 in the bottom of the seventh, Miami's bullpen scattered three hits over the final three innings while the offense added three more runs to secure the RedHawk victory.
Miami starting pitcher Chris Leonard (Columbus, Ohio/St. Francis DeSales) picked up the win to raise his record to 4-1. The RedHawks handed Austin Peay reliever Klint Rommel his first loss of the season, dropping the junior to 4-1.
Offensively, every Miami starter notched at least one hit, led by Jason Knoedler's (Springfield, Ill./Springfield/Lincoln Land C.C.) 3-for-6, two runs, two RBI effort and Maces 2-for-5, one run, three RBI performance.
Miami closes out its two-game stint with Austin Peay at 1 p.m. Sunday afternoon.
