BOCA RATON, Fla. (Mar. 16) - Miami University's baseball team wrapped up a flawless
spring break trip Thursday (March 16), earning its fifth and sixth consecutive
wins over Rutgers and Iona, respectively. The RedHawks came from behind in both games, defeating Rutgers, 6-4, and Iona, 8-7.
In the day's first contest, Miami trailed Rutgers 3-2 before rallying for a
4-3 lead in the top of the fourth inning. Rutgers tied the game at four runs
apiece in the bottom inning but would not plate another run. The RedHawks' pitching combination of Tim Wagner and Matt Allen combined for five shutout
innings and Miami tallied a pair of go-ahead runs in the top of the sixth
inning to clinch a 6-4 win over the Big East Conference's preseason favorite.
Leading Miami at the plate were four hitters with two hits apiece. Bobby
Barnes and Brady Nori each went 2-for-5 with a run and an RBI while Joe
Spain went 2-for-4 with an RBI. Jeremy Ison went 2-for-3 with an RBI and two
runs. The win was picked up by Wagner, who pitched four scoreless innings,
while Allen earned his second save of the season with a scoreless ninth.
The RedHawks wrapped up their Florida trip by defeating Iona for the second
time this week. The Gaels surged to a 5-2 lead by the top of the
seventh inning, but Miami used consecutive doubles by John Lackaff and Ison
to knot the score in the bottom of the eighth. Iona once again claimed the
lead in the top of the ninth, plating two runs, but Miami was not finished.
Zach Schmidt and Eddie Tillitz scored off a Clark Mace sacrifice and a
Lackaff single, respectively, and Iona threw a bases loaded walk that scored
Bobby Barnes as the game winner.
Allen, who made his second consecutive ninth inning appearance, picked up
his first win of the season while Steve Fugarnio absorbed the loss for Iona.
Miami was led by Lackaff, who went 3-of-5 with four RBIs and a run scored.
Ison went 2-for-4 with three RBIs and a run while Nori went 2-of-5 with two
runs scored. Clark Mace, who tallied a hit in both games, extended his
hitting streak to 18 consecutive games.
Miami returns home this weekend to engage in a three-game series with
Detroit. The RedHawks are scheduled for one game on Saturday and a
doubleheader on Sunday.
