FRESNO, Calif. -- Miami University pitchers Judd Richardson (Caledon, Ontario/Country Day) and Billy Kieninger (Xenia, Ohio/Xenia) combined for a four-hitter and center fielder Clark Mace (London, Ohio/Madison Plains) fell a home run short of the cycle to lead the RedHawks past Fresno State 2-1 Saturday night (March 10) at Pete Beiden Field.
Richardson, a sophomore making only the second start of his career, went seven innings allowing only three hits and an unearned run to pick up his first win of the season.
Miami opened up a 1-0 lead in the first inning when center fielder Mace tripled to right center, driving in Brady Nori (Middletown, Ohio/Middletown). Mace then held on to the lead for the RedHawks in the bottom of the frame when he made a diving catch to rob Fresno State clean-up hitter Josh Labanderia of extra bases and end strand Bulldog Oscar Lopez on third.
The Red and White added a run in the fourth on designated hitter Tom Yost's (London, Ohio/Jonathan Alder) RBI single to left.
That would be all Miami (4-4) would need as Richardson allowed only one hit through six innings. Fresno State (14-8) was able to push an unearned run across in the seventh, but Kieninger came on in the eighth to put the game away, earning his second career save and first of the season.
Mace was 3-for-4 on the evening, with an RBI and a run scored.
Miami closes its two-game series with the Bulldogs Sunday at Beiden Field. First pitch is set for 1 p.m. (PST).
