FRESNO, Calif. (March 11) -- Despite a complete game and career-high 9.1 innings from sophomore pitcher Chris Leonard (Columbus, Ohio/St. Francis DeSales), Miami University's baseball team was held at bay by Fresno State pitching for the final eight innings of its 3-2 10-inning loss to the Bulldogs Sunday afternoon at Pete Beiden Field.

The setback was Miami's first in extra frames since falling 4-3 to Bowling Green on April 22, 2000.

Like it had in Saturday night's 2-1 victory over Fresno State, the RedHawks jumped on the board early, taking a 1-0 lead in the first inning. Jeremy Ison (Hudson, Ohio/Hudson) lofted a a sacrifice fly to left field, driving in Brady Nori (Middletown, Ohio/Middletown) to record Miami's run.

However, a string of two-out Fresno State hits in the bottom of the first, capped by Casey McGehee's RBI single, evened the score 1-1.

Miami (4-5) recaptured the lead in the second when catcher Luke Reinhart (Downers Grove, Ill./Montini Catholic) roped a double down the left field line and later scored on a wild pitch to put the RedHawks up 2-1.

Fresno State (15-8) answered again in the third when Josh Labandeira blasted a solo home run over the left field wall to tie the game at two.

From there on, the contest became a pitcher's duel between Leonard and Bulldog starter Nick Moran. Leonard allowed only four hits over the next six innings, while Moran retired 20 of the last 21 batters he faced. The only RedHawk batter to reach base during that stretch was when Reinhart was hit by a pitch with two out in the seventh.

Fresno State reached Leonard for three singles in the tenth, including the game-winner off the bat of McGehee.

Miami opens play in the Pepsi/Johnny Quik Classic in Fresno at 4 p.m. (PST) Monday versus Bucknell.
